This campaign supports our 2020 projects on New York’s Lower East Side. 23% of the people in the neighborhood live in poverty and we’re serving youth in the community with rich cultural programming.
LESCollective is designed to connect youth more deeply with themselves and their community through culture. As in our previous programs, this year’s participants will learn about LES social history and take workshops in music, photography, art + design and history, however this time they’re doing it online. We are delivering musical instruments, arts supplies, books and other cultural items as part of a series of community cultural workshops that will involve performance, writing, art and design and other cultural skills that will be developed while self-isolating and beyond.
These workshops will be combined with screening and talks with local activists and historians giving participants deeper insight into the place they live has evolved and the people who were part of shaping its unique culture.
The project will culminate in live performances and exhibitions in public art spaces at its conclusion.
